2025 was a positive one for equity markets and clients closed out the year loading up on more tech names during the final two holiday-shortened trading weeks.
The S&P 500 gained more than 16% last year, its third straight annual advance, while the Nasdaq rose 20% and the Dow advanced 13% as each of the three main indices hit record highs in 2025.
UK stocks had a ripping year as the FTSE 100 ended up more than 20% higher and set a new benchmark high above 10,000 as 2026 started.
Many of the key themes that drove equity markets in 2025 were on show in the final trading days of the year.
In the final two weeks of 2025 clients at Saxo bought into big tech names Nvidia, Tesla, Alphabet, Broadcom and Amazon as the year closed out.
Gold proved a popular trade – both the physical gold ETC and the VanEck Gold Miners UCITS ETF, which had 86% buys over the fortnight. Silver’s meteoric rise last year garnered investor attention via the Global X Silver Miners UCITS ETF.
Bitcoin was another keen trade as Strategy made our top ten most traded stocks and had a strong 89% buy weighting, while Coinbase was also popular.
The space economy was popular ahead of this year’s anticipated SpaceX IPO – Rocket Lab and AST SpaceMobile catching some interest.
Among UK listed stocks the most popular trades were in Marks & Spencer and Diageo.
