The most bought and sold stocks and ETFs last week.
The ceasefire between the US and Iran held last week and by Friday hopes of a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz fuelled a risk-on rally. Global equities hit record highs as growth and momentum stocks led gains. US tech stocks rallied as the Mag7 rebounded further to push the Nasdaq 100 into fresh record territory.
Clients lent into Microsoft as the stock notched one of its best run of daily gains in years. It was the most traded stock last week and registered 66% net buys. Tesla was also popular and posted a net buy ratio of 60% as shares rallied after the company said its AI chip design was ready, while Netflix attracted 71% net buys after the stock plunged after disappointing quarterly earnings. And while Mag7 stocks rallied sharply last week our clients were net sellers of Nvidia, Amazon and Meta.
Among the biggest shifts in activity from the previous 5 days, last week saw heavy interest in Robinhood Markets, Oracle, SanDisk and quantum computing name IonQ – which along with Nvidia helped to spur a big rally in quantum stocks last week.
The Vanguard FTSE 100 UCITS ETF, Vanguard FTSE All-World UCITS Acc ETF, VanEck Semiconductor UCITS ETF and iShares Global Clean Energy Transition UCITS ETF were among the most popular funds bought by clients in the last week.
Among UK-listed stocks clients sold BP as oil prices came off the boil and bought into Rolls-Royce on hopes that Iran and the US could come to terms soon. In Europe, Hermes was popular after the stock plunged on weak results.
