There’s not a huge amount on the calendar before the new year, but investors will be hoping for a traditional Santa Rally to cement gains for the year.
Here’s the key events to watch over the next two weeks.
Monday, 22 December
Little on the calendar of note - China interest rates and final UK GDP.
Tuesday, 23 December
Raft of US data pre-Christmas: preliminary GDP, durable goods orders and the ADP weekly employment report, before the Richmond Fed manufacturing index and CB Consumer Confidence survey.
France must pass its budget by today if it’s to be signed into law by the President by the end of the year.
Wednesday, 24 December
Bank holiday in Germany, US weekly unemployment claims data. Early finish on Wall Street.
Thursday, 25 December
Christmas Day – markets shut. BoJ governor Ueda to speak at the usual Keidanren business leaders event.
Friday, 26 December
European markets remain closed – US markets reopen.
Monday, 29 December
German retail sales, US trade data.
Tuesday, 30 December
FOMC meeting minutes will highlight just how divided the Fed is on the path of rate cuts. ADP weekly employment data and US house price data also due.
Wednesday 31 December
China manufacturing PMI and weekly US unemployment claims round out the year.
Thursday, 1 January
New Year’s Day – markets closed.
Friday, 2 January
Japan and China remain closed, as does Switzerland. Final PMI data from the US is the highlight on a quiet session for data. Looking ahead, markets will be eyeing the start of earnings season in January, the upcoming nonfarm payrolls report on 9 January and return of the UK parliament on 5 January.
