More reasons to trade FX options with Saxo

Select a strike price tailored to your strategy, down to 5-pip increments. You’re not limited to broad price intervals, giving you more flexibility and precise alignment for hedging.

FX options limit your risk by design—your risk is limited to the premium you pay, keeping your position active until expiration. This allows you to benefit from potential market swings over time, without the risk of an early stop-out disrupting your strategy.

You don’t need to call in to manage the exercise or expiry. You can choose either to have the FX options converted into a spot position on expiry, or to have them cash settled. (This exercise method can be changed up to one hour prior to expiry.)

For the automated cash settlement, when FX options reach expiration, any in-the-money options are automatically settled in cash. The automated cash settlement pays out the difference between the strike price and the closing market price, allowing you to realise gains without additional steps or the complexities of a physical currency transaction.

With FX options, you have the flexibility to adjust, exit, or manage your positions throughout the life of the option—giving you opportunities to react to market shifts up until expiry. FX options can be bought or sold until maturity, so you can adjust your strategy or close positions early to capitalise on favorable moves or to minimise risk.

Forex option trading FAQs

When you trade FX options, you can choose between two exercise methods (and you can change that method up to one hour prior to expiry) for options that end up in the money.

The FX options can either be converted into a spot position, or they can be cash settled. You do not need to call in to manually manage the exercise or expiry. In-the-money options will automatically settle according to your pre-defined exercise method. If the FX option is not in the money, it will automatically expire (cease to exist) at 10 am EST (GMT-5) on the expiration date.

There are many benefits to trading FX options, which can help diversify and strengthen your portfolio depending on your goals. FX options allow you to speculate on currency pair movements with limited risk, offering flexibility to hedge or leverage your positions. Unlike traditional FX trading, FX options provide a defined maximum risk (the premium) while allowing for potential upside based on market changes. However, options come with added complexity, so understanding their structure and risks is important for effective use.

With a Saxo account, you can trade FX options on a wide range of currency pairs, selecting your own strike price and expiration to match your strategy. You can explore our trading platform to access expert analysis, news, and educational content—perfect for getting familiar with FX options before you even open an account.
