The most bought and sold stocks and ETFs last week.
Last week saw an interesting shift in investor behaviour with a notable repositioning in ETFs. The largest relative positive week-on-week position changes were into the Vanguard FTSE 100 UCITS ETF, Vanguard All-World UCITS ETF and the VanEck Semiconductor UCITS ETF – which hit a record high last week. This may in part be a reaction to the geopolitical shifts taking place as investors seek diversification within ETFs. I looked at why investors should consider ETFs last year.
In absolute terms the highest activity remained in Nvidia but clients were net sellers with 44% of trades a buy last week.
Clients also sold Meta but were net buyers of Alphabet, Microsoft and Tesla – those 5 big tech names were together the most actively traded stocks on the platform.
Among UK stocks Rolls-Royce was the most actively traded and sixth overall. Shares of the aerospace giant pulled back and clients were bullish, trading at 2:1 buys to sells. BAE Systems also attracted a strong bid from clients as defence stocks advanced against an increasingly challenging geopolitical backdrop.
The strength in silver trade did not go unnoticed and we saw a notable increase in activity in silver miners Hecla Mining, First Majestic and Fresnillo, while the Global X Silver Miners UCITS ETF made our top 30 list.
On the other side, clients were heavy net sellers of Alibaba.
