Key Points

  • Mining, Latin America and Biotechnology were some of the major themes of 2025 for UK investment trusts
  • Despite the AI trade dominating stock markets, investment trusts have shown resilience through diversification
  • Investment trusts can offer investors a valuable tool for diversifying their portfolios

As 2025 draws to a close it’s time to take stock of some of the top performing ISA-eligible investment trusts over the last year*.

CQS Natural Resources Growth and Income Plc +80.89%

Invests in mining and resources equities. Largest holdings include uranium miner NextGen Energy, and gold explorers Emerald Resources and Ora Banda Mining. Clearly a beneficiary of the surge in metal prices, particularly gold, in 2025. I had a look at investing in gold here.

BlackRock World Mining Trust Plc +67.57%

Another basic resource trust investing in large mining stocks, the largest holding is Agnico Eagle Mines, Canada’s largest mining company and world number two gold producer. Rio Tinto, Wheaton Precious Metals Corp, Vale and Freeport-McMoRan are also +5% holdings.

BlackRock Latin America Inv Trust Plc +48.56%

Investors have warmed to Latin America this year and this trust makes the top three with investments in large cap miners Vale and Southern Copper, as well as Brazil-based digital banking group Nu Holdings, among others.

International Biotechnology Trust Plc +46.63%

Biotechnology stocks have also had a good run this year. The largest holdings in this trust include Vera Therapeutics, Soleno Therapeutics, and KalVista Pharmaceuticals.

Biotech Growth Trust Plc +43.27%

The second biotech-focused investment trust to make the top five has as its largest holdings in Avidity Biosciences, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals and Axsome Therapeutics.

If you want to learn more about incorporating gold into your portfolio, I had a look at the Ray Dalio All-Weather Portfolio, and had a look at a simple DIY diversified approach that incorporates gold.
