Morning Brew 1 minute to read

Summary:  US 10`s top 5%

Good morning.

Higher oil prices, rising bond yields and renewed Middle East tensions are setting a cautious tone ahead of this week’s Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan meetings.

U.S. 10-year Treasury yields are trading around the psychologically important 5% level as markets price a roughly 90% probability of a 25-basis-point Federal Reserve rate increase on Wednesday. A further increase is also expected later this year.

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has avoided giving explicit guidance on the rate path. The policy decision is due at 20:00 CET on Wednesday, followed by updated economic projections and a press conference.

Middle East risks have increased. Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis launched fresh attacks on Saudi Arabia, including a strike on a military airbase in Khamis Mushait. Saudi Arabia also blamed Iran-backed fighters in Iraq for an attack on its east-west pipeline, which could affect as much as 4% of global oil supply. Gulf Arab states postponed planned talks with Iran.

Renewed supply concerns lifted U.S. crude to around USD 102.70 per barrel and Brent to approximately USD 107.00.

Artificial-intelligence stocks came under pressure after industry leaders called for a slowdown in the development of advanced models. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 5.9%, while Nvidia, Broadcom, Intel, AMD, Marvell and Micron all declined.

U.S. equities closed lower. The S&P 500 fell 0.5% to 7,619.98, the Dow Jones declined 0.3% to 52,421.20, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.6% to 26,186.41. Corning fell roughly 14% after announcing a USD 2 billion at-the-market equity offering. Goldman Sachs declined 4.0% and Bank of America fell 5.0%, while CrowdStrike gained 13.8% and Palo Alto Networks rose 13%.

European equities also moved lower. The Stoxx Europe 600 fell 0.5%, the DAX declined 0.5%, and the CAC 40 lost 0.8%. The FTSE 100 rose 0.4%, supported by energy shares. German Bund yields reached a 15-year high.

The USD Index is at 99.60, EUR/USD at 1.1536, GBP/USD at 1.3480 and USD/JPY at 154.70. Gold is trading around 4,300 and silver near 63.20.

All eyes will be on the middle east and any implication or the planned AI slowdown while we are waiting for the FOMC – Even if the outcome is all but certain.

Charu summarized the 5% story : Bond yields at 5%: Questions investors should ask now

Key points:

  • A 5% Treasury yield changes the risk-return trade-off. High-quality bonds may now provide enough income to play a larger role for investors focused on income, capital preservation or nearer-term financial goals.
  • But 5% is a nominal yield. Inflation, taxes and, for non-US investors, currency movements can materially change the return investors actually experience.
  • This is not simply a choice between bonds and equities. Time horizon, required return and tolerance for losses should determine the mix, while other diversifiers can also matter when stocks and bonds fall together.
