Recently, U.S. consumer prices rose less than expected as of November. While this might sound like good news, many households are still feeling the pinch of rising costs for essentials like beef and electricity, creating a political challenge for President Trump. The Consumer Price Index showed moderation, likely due to the government shutdown delaying data collection until discounts kicked in during the holiday season.
Lack of bad news and low inflation lifted stocks: The Dow, S&P, and Nasdaq all saw gains, with Micron Technology up by over 10% after positive profit forecasts, and Trump Media jumping more than 40% on a big merger deal - Mal y soit qui mal y pense. In currency and metal markets, EUR/USD is down at 1.1720, USD/JPY is up at 156.10, while GBP/USD is at 1.3380. Precious metals were volatile; Platinum, Gold, and Silver all had noticeable moves, and Bitcoin is still below the 90k level.
The ECB held rates steady again, focusing on flexibility amid uncertainty, with modest growth and inflation forecasts ahead. Meanwhile, the Bank of England reduced rates as expected to address easing inflation and economic pressures. Fed's Goolsbee is cautious about cutting rates too fast and is hoping for more steady inflation declines.
